The Dallas Morning News | With its electric motor, Linear Labs wants to turn Dallas-Fort Worth into ‘Detroit of electrification’

by: Melissa Repko Fort Worth-based Linear Labs wants to put its electric motors into everything from scooters to air conditioners — and it wants to make them in North Texas. The startup opened a new lab and headquarters earlier this year, and it has signed deals with eight companies. It plans to hire more engineers and build a facility to test different approaches to manufacturing next year. With electric cars and other kinds of electrification, steps toward a better battery often steal the spotlight. Linear Labs is focused on another piece of the puzzle: developing a less expensive, more powerful ...

DesignNews | Linear Labs Promises a Moonshot for Electric Motor Technology

by: Dan Carney Remember Astronaut Farmer? It was a 2006 Billy Bob Thornton film with the preposterous premise that a retired astronaut Texas rancher could assemble an Atlas rocket from spare parts and launch himself into space. There is something almost as absurd afoot in Texas now; an electric motor startup making amazing performance claims that arose from a father/son project to improve upon the traditional Aeromotor windmill (a San Angelo, Texas product) for pumping water from wells. Linear Labs CEO Brad Hunstable makes claims about the effectiveness of what the company dubs the Hunstable Electric Turbine, an electric motor ...

TU Automotive | Five-Times More Torque Claimed by EV Motor

By Phil Oakley A Texan engineering company claims to have increased electric motor torque performance by five-fold. Linear Labs’ Hunstable Electric Turbine (HET) also claims to be smaller and lighter than traditional electric motors and able to generate three times the power density and 10% more range than existing models. Instead of using either AC or DC motors employing magnets spinning to create an electric field, HET uses a ‘magnetic tunnel’. This has the same polarity on all sides so the magnetic flux produced travels in the same direction as the rotor. The system claims torque can be produced more ...

CNN | Congested streets, dying batteries and fragile design: These are the problems e-bikes and scooters must overcome

By Brad Hunstable Shared electric scooters and bikes seem to have popped up overnight in cities throughout the world. E-scooter brands, such as Bird and Lime, are now known from Paris to Los Angeles. They have become an easy and affordable way for people to get around, and will further reduce traffic congestion and carbon emissions as more riders start using them. Electric micromobility has already assured its place in the sharing economy. Future generations will visit a city and think nothing of zipping to their destination on shared transportation. The National Association of City Transportation Officials reported that people took 84 ...

Autotimes News | Americans have developed a new electric motor

According to the statement of Fred and Brad Hunstable – the founders of the company – with the same size, the same weight, the same volume and the same amount of energy supplied to the engine, their device will produce two to three times more torque than any electric motor in the world. The inventors themselves call their device “a three-dimensional permanent magnet motor with a circular flow and four rotors”. read more on Autotimes News ...

Autoblog | The Hunstable Electric Turbine promises a revolution in electric motors

Linear Labs was founded as a father-son team based in in Ft. Worth, Texas six years ago. Prior to that, father Fred Hunstable designed electrical systems for nuclear power stations for companies like Ebasco and Walker Engineering before the U.S. put the kibosh on atomic energy generation. Son Brad Hunstable co-founded streaming service Ustream, sold to IBM for $150M in early 2016. Together, the Hunstables say they've created "a new class of electric motor" called the Hunstable Electric Turbine (HET), promising that "For the same size, same weight, same volume, and the same amount of input energy into the motor, ...

Dallas Innovates | A Look at the Industries Dallas-Fort Worth May Dominate Down the Road

By Jeff Bounds The inaugural Venture Dallas conference this week was about connecting entrepreneurs with investors. But, the 300-plus attendees were also treated to possible answers to an overarching question: What industry will become synonymous with North Texas? “We have an opportunity to be the electrification capital of the world,” Brad Hunstable, CEO and founder of Fort Worth’s Linear Labs, said Wednesday during his presentation at the Design District’s Hall on Dragon. “We have the pieces if we brand it properly to stake it, name it [and] claim it as a region.” read more on Dallas Innovates ...
